Connecting to the DFS from a remote location using Windows XP:

To connect to the DFS from a remote location using Windows XP, you will need to make the following modifications to append two suffixes to your DNS settings. Here are the steps involved in making this change:

Using the default XP Window view:
  • click on the "Start" button in the lower left of your desktop
  • then click on "My Network Places".
  • Next click on "View network connections" under the Network Tasks heading on the left
Or...
Using the Classic Windows desktop:
  • right click on the "My Network Places" icon on your desktop
  • select "properties"

Then:

  • Right click on your normal connection, in this case it is the "Local Area Connection"

  • Next, click on the "Properties" option

  • Confirm that there is a check mark next to Client for Microsoft Networks, if necessary check the box now
  • Confirm the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is also checked, if not, do so now

  • Then highlight that line

  • Now click on the "Properties button" to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window

Your screen may differ from the sample here, which is not significant at this time
  • Click on the "Advanced" button in the lower right area to open the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window

  • Click on the "DNS" tab

  • Click on the radio button next to "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)"
  • Click on the "add" button and type in:
    unr.edu

and then click on "add" again and type in:
    library.unr.edu

  • Now click on "OK"

  • Next, click on "OK" again when you are back in the TCP/IP properties (General) dialog box

  • Next, click on "Close" on the General tab in the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box

  • Now, still in your Network Connections window, click on the "Tools" menu pulldown along the top toolbar

  • Click on "Map Network Drive..."

You have now mapped a drive to the archival storage space on the DFS.

You can access the folder via the drive letter that you have mapped. Each time you access the folder after you have restarted your computer you will be prompted for your user ID (UNR\userid) and password.
