| Description | Scale [ca. 1:3, 041, 280]. 1 in. to approx. 48 miles (W 124--W 103/N 42--N 31); 1 map : 40 x 60 cm; Relief shown by hachures and spot heights; Hand colored; Decorative border; Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington; Plates 54 & 55 from Johnson's New illustrated family atlas of the world, with descriptions geographical, statistical and historical... second of two editions published in New York in 1862; Shows routes in California and territories of New Mexico and Utah. Shows natural features, locations of Indian tribes, proposed railroad routes, routes of explorers, trails, county boundaries and populated places. Boundaries for Nevada & Utah still incorrect since the 1860 map. Long horizontal New Mexico. Gadsden Purchase line of June 20, 1854. AZ is southern third of NM and is subtitled "The Gadsden Ten Million Purchase of Mexico" and has gold, silver and copper mines. An excellent relatively low cost map of the American Southwest that shows forts with flags, explorer's tracks with dates, Indian locales, (pony express) mail route, railroads constructed or proposed. The Great American Desert is now called the Great Basin. |

| Digitization Specifications | This JPEG2000 file was derived from a high-resolution (300 dpi, 24-bit) uncompressed TIFF image that was scanned from the original using an IDEAL/Contex Magnum 54" Plus wide format scanner, default color configuration. The TIFF files were also converted into both the JPEG and DjVu formats. These files are all loaded on the UNR Libraries' NAS server. |
