Rochapea was established by gardners who worked outside of the city walls and is the second oldest neighborhood in Pamplona after Casco Viejo ("Old Town, " also known as Casco Antiguo and Alde Zaharra). It's named after the Torre de la Rocha that ws used to defend San Cernin. Rochapea was badly damaged by the French in the runup to the War of the Convention. It was damaged again when Don Leopoldo O'Donnell y Jorris (1809 – 1867; 1st Duke of Tetuan, 1st Count of Lucena, 1st Viscount of Aliaga, Grandee of Spain) attempted to restore exiled Queen María Cristina de Borbón (1806 – 1878) to the throne. |
