Battle of Kelley Creek - Bodies
Battle of Kelley Creek - Bodies
TitleBattle of Kelley Creek - Bodies
Summary/DescriptionUnidentified members of "Shoshone Mike" (also known as "Indian Mike", "Rock Creek Mike" and "Salmon River Mike") Daggett's band who died in the Battle of Kelley Creek. Mike Daggett (né Ondongarte), along with his mixed band of Bannock and Shoshone people, lived a nomadic life after he lost his family farm on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation to settlers in a land claim dispute. They killed four men--John Laxague, Peter Erramouspe, Bertrand Indiano, and Harry Cambron--who came to investigate the theft of local cattle. After time on the run, the group was discovered near Kelly Creek in Nevada's Humboldt County and a battle ensued. None people were killed during the fight, including two children and a posse volunteer. At the time, the incident was framed as one of the last fights against the "wild" Indians through hearsay and yellow journalism. Contemporary scholars and historians, however, believe that the incident was less of an uprising and more likely an attempt to avoid capture for a crime directly related to their desperate situation. ca. February 26, 1911
