Following Maderno's death, he entered Bernini's atelier. San Carlo was Borromini's first independent commission after leaving Bernini's studio. It is a narrow urban site, missing its northeast corner because of one of the fountains. Both the interior and the facade (not finished until late in Borromini's life) are filled with highly rhythmic concave-convex movement and comlex geometries."
