Description/Notes
Born
in
Switzerland
as
Francesco
Castelli
, he
changed
his
name
when
he
came
to
Rome
in
1619
and
entered
the
studio
of
Carlo
Maderno
, a
distant
relative.
Following
Maderno's
death
, he
entered
Bernini's
atelier.
San
Carlo
was
Borromini's
first
independent
commission
after
leaving
Bernini's
studio.
It
is
a
narrow
urban
site
,
missing
its
northeast
corner
because
of
one
of the
fountains.
Both
the
interior
and the
facade
(not
finished
until
late
in
Borromini's
life)
are
filled
with
highly
rhythmic
concave-convex
movement
and
comlex
geometries."
