In
ancient
Rome
, this was the
terminus
of the
Aquo
Virgo.
Broken
in
teh
5th
century
,
it
was
restored
in the
15th
c.
Urban
VIII
commissioned
Bernini
in
1629
to
enhance
teh
15th-century
work
, but the
projecct
ended
with
Urban's
death.
Bernini
did
shift
the
fountain
across
the
square
so
that
it
backed
up
against
the
Palazzo
Poli
and
faced
the
Pope's
Quirinal
Palace.
Pope
Clement
XII
commissioned
Salvi.
Pannini
finished
it
following
Salvi's
death.
Bracci's
"Neptune"
is
in the
central
niche.
