Description/Notes
The
nave
fresco
is
the
Apotheosis
of
St.
Ignatius
(St.
Ignatius
being
welcomed
to
heaven
by the
Virgin
Mary
and
Christ.
Famed
for its
dramatic
illusionism
in
which
the
ceiling
appears
to
open
to the
heavens.
On the
mathematics
of the
illusionism
of this
ceiling
,
see:
http://library.thinkquest.org/3257/illusion.html#ignazio
The
dome
is
also
completely
an
illusion.
Painted
on a
canvas
which
measures
17m
across
,
it
is
best
seen
from a
spot
marked
on the
floor
of the
church
by a
bronze
plaque.
The
monks
whose
church
and
monastary
were
next
to
Sant'Ignatius
complained
that the
planned
dome
would
block
their
light
[a
complaint
which
may
have had has
much
to
do
with
jealousies
and
politics
as
it
did
with the
realities
of
light
(Dr.
R.J.Betts).]
The
solution
was a
trompe
l'oeil
dome
,
Pozzo's
illusion
of a
dramatic
dome.
