| Description/Notes | Begun by Bramante for Pope Julius II, 1505. Following Bramante's death there was a long hiatus until Michelangelo began work, 1546, on what is now the head (apse and crossing and perhaps the first bay of the nave). Vignola (1540-1584) and Giacomo della Porta (1532 or 1533, died 1602 or 1604 ) finished Michelangelo's dome. Maderno began work on the extension of the nave and a new facade in 1605-1614. Bernini finally finished the complex with work on important interior features, including the Baldachino, in the 1620's and 1630's and on the Piazza in the mid-17th century. |
