Originally
approached
by a
stairs
,
rubble
and
silting
from the
Tiber
flooding
,
eventually
raised
the
surrounding
levels
above
the
threshhold
of the
entrance
door.
Walls
were
built
inside
the
perimeter
of the
colonnade
to
hold
back
the
dirt
and
steps
built
down
to the
portico
entrance.
In
addition
to the
bronze
door
,
portico
beams
were
originally
bronze-clad.
