Description/NotesBegun 27 BCE by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. Rebuilt 118-126 CE by Emperor Hadrian. Largest clear span until Brunelleschi's dome for Florence Duomo (1420-36). Originally faced a rectilinear, colonnaded temple courtyard, now the irregularly shaped Piazza della Rotunda. Rededicated as a Christian church in 609 as Chiesa di Santa Maria de Rotunda or Chiesa di Santa Maria ad Martyres. See: http://www.crystalinks.com/romepantheon.html or http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Pantheon.html This view shows the differential between the modern street level and the 2nd century leve, up to perhaps 20 feet or more in some places. Remnants of veneers and decorations - engaged columns and moldings also visible.
