CE, present Church of San Clemente dates from 1100. When the site of the late 4th-century church was filled in, some of furnishings were salvaged. Pope John II (533-535) was a substantial patron of the church, and many of the salvaged materials date from the 6th century. See: http://roma.katolsk.no/clemente.htm " This site points out that the back of the throne with its partial word "MAR." for martyr, has been recycled from an earlier work, and dates the throne only by calling it ancient.
