SubjectCoronation of the Virgin
Description/NotesUnusual apse subject matter, which is more typically the Pantokrator, or Christ Entrhoned. Image of the Coronation of the Virgin derives from the dedication of Santa Maria Maggiore to the Virgin (probably a rededication when the building was redone in 432 CE, in line with the new emphasis on the role of the Virgin at the Council of Ephesus in 432 CE." Probably done in conjunction with the addition of a transept to the 5th century basilica by Pope Nicholas IV (1288-1292)" See: http://roma.katolsk.no/mariamaggiore.htm#nave
